What Jobseekers Can Learn from The Hunger Games

What Jobseekers Can Learn from The Hunger Games Do you have what it takes to be a victor in your job search? Like 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who fought her way to victory in the 74th Annual Hunger Games, unemployed job seekers are widely regarded by hiring managers as underdogs in today’s job search. With unemployment at 8.3 percent, the lucky few who are called to participate in a job interview find that they have a lot to prove in the fight for one coveted position. Let’s face it, in our current economic climate, if you’ve got gaps in your resume, went to a lower-tier school or are too old/young, you are not as likely as other job seekers to be called in for an interview. Job seekers must make sure that the odds of obtaining that interview are “ever in your favor” by using all of the tools at your disposal to stand out to potential employers. Keep reading for job search survival tips: 1) Volunteer: Katniss volunteers to participate in the Hunger Games in place of her sister, Prim. She is the first-ever volunteer from District 12, and her selflessness endears her to the Capitol. There is some debate among employers regarding whether or not it pays to work for free, but many experts believe that volunteering at a company provides important connections, experience and encouragement to discouraged job seekers. 2) Become the Girl on Fire: Katniss becomes “The Girl on Fire” after making a powerful first impression with potential sponsors at the opening ceremony of the Hunger Games. An interview is your first opportunity to present yourself to a potential employer dynamically. Make sure that you remain confident and you dress appropriately. You want people to remember you. 3) Shoot a squirrel in the eye: Peeta can throw a heavy bag of flour over his head as a result of working at a bakery for his whole life. Katniss is an expert with a bow and arrow â€" shooting her prey in the eye to make a clean kill. Make sure that you, too, are emphasizing your unique skills in the job search. What can you bring to a potential employer that no one else can? 4) Remember they already love you; just be yourself: Katniss’ mentor, Haymitch, cannot decide how to present her to the public. In response, her stylist tells her just to be herself. As your job search progresses, you may find yourself frustrated by the specific demands of potential employers â€" and you may feel obligated to start applying for jobs that are not an exact fit for your skill set. Keep in mind that the best job for you is one that is challenging, that makes use of your skill set, and that allows you to learn and excel. Wait for that job â€" or create it for yourself and pitch the benefit to your favorite companies. You’ve probably already heard that The Hunger Games grossed $152.5 million during its opening weekend â€" making it Hollywoods third-biggest opener of all time. And if you saw the movie, you probably cheered for Katniss as she worked to perfect her image, navigate a seemingly impossible situation and to survive. As a job seeker, that is the trick to an effective job search â€" to perfect your image, to cheerfully navigate a seemingly impossible situation, and to survive. May the odds be ever in your favor. 2013 Year in Review and Looking Ahead to 2014

2013 Year in Review and Looking Ahead to 2014 2013 Year in Review Its almost time to ring in the new year!  Its usually around this time that I start making next years goals and forget about what happened last year.  Its funny because sometimes you only remember the bad things that happen in the year but when I do this annual year in review post, I realize that I had a ton of accomplishments and awesome things happen too!  Its always a good idea to review your past year and think about what went well and what you are thankful for. This year was a year of facing fears and personal growth. It was truly a foundational year with a ton of really hard work. I believe that everything I did and learned in 2013 has now set me up for big success in 2014! 2013 Year in Review Goals I Achieved: I got over a ton of fears by planning and executing my very first live event that was a huge success called Elevate Your Career San Diego. I wrote a book and then re-wrote it 10 more times thanks to my fabulous editors.  Its one of my best things I have written and I am excited to launch my book in Feb-2014! I became a Professor at DeVry University and taught Career Development, Journalism, and Principles of Management. I improved my time management, delegation, and organization by creating systems for my life and business. My husband and I gathered 6-month savings in the bank. In 2012, we got out of debt and now are following Dave Ramseys plan. Read this post to learn more about how we got out of debt. I was extremely honored that Classy Career Girl made Forbes Top 100 Sites For Your Career and 35 of the Most Influential Career Sites For 2014 I was quoted in People Stylewatch about how to dress in a conservative work environment. I created two new products that have helped hundreds of people: My 10-Day Resume and Cover Letter Makeover and my 90-Day Virtual Find a Job You Love Course. I interviewed 23 career experts and authors in the Get Ahead Club! Not only that but I made some great relationships with each of these authors that is now VERY helpful now that my book is about to come out. Since I made those initial connections, I have now been able to reach out to them for reviews of my brand new book and most have been happy to help!  This is a great example of why you need to start networking before you actually need help! I participated in VEDA and I vlogged (almost) every day in April!  You can check out all of my videos on my YouTube channel. I created a ton of free products and ebooks for Classy Career Girl readers. One of my favorite things to do is put together free things for all of you.  I have enjoyed so many free ebooks and webinars from other websites and bloggers that have changed my career and business that I love doing the same to help you. I worked individually with 8 new clients and helped them find new jobs, update their resumes, accelerate their leadership, manage their time better, manage their bosses and get promotions! I landed four local news appearances at Fox 5 San Diego and San Diego 6 News.  The first one was totally scary but I am now way more comfortable on live TV! I  partnered with Dress for Success San Diego  as the featured charity for my Elevate Your Career events. Thanks to the attendees at our September event, we donated $150 to Dress for Success San Diego! Books That Impacted Me This Year: Coach Yourself to Success by  Talane Miedaner. I learned about tolerations from this book and started making a list of everything I was tolerating in my life.  Even just the little things like that clothes pile in my closet or the pile of Goodwill in my trunk were things that were holding me back. Once I cleared out most of my tolerations, it felt great! The Success Principles: How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be by Jack Canfield. This book helped me put together my vision journal and helped me realize that reaching your big goal is as simple as taking five little actions every day. Now, I am doing five  things  every day that will help promote my book and I think it will make a big difference in the long run. Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead  by Sheryl Sandberg.  This book was a major inspiration for me this year because I was also writing about working with and managing men.  Its a scary thing to write about but I feel like Sheryl made it SO MUCH easier for me to write my book and pave the way for future female authors.  I love this quote from the book because I feel the exact same way Ask yourself what would you do if I werent afraid? And then go do it. Writing this book is not just me encouraging others to lean in. This is me leaning in. Writing this book is what I would do if I werent afraid. Heaven is For Real: A Little Boys Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back  by Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent. I always rate each book I read and this one has an additional 5 stars next to my rating of A+ so you know I loved it. If you need a break from the career books that I always recommend and want to read a very simple message about a little boys trip to heaven, definitely read this book. Seminars, Workshops and Networking Events That Impacted Me: I invested in my own coaching and joined Ali Browns  Elevate  Program. I realized that starting a business is tough and I need the advice and guidance from others who have already succeeded.  I now know that I am a WAY BETTER coach because I have received coaching myself and believe that every coach should have their own coach. I became a member of Connected Women of Influence. This is a group of executives and professional women that I am very excited to learn and grow with! This year I have been inspired by some amazing panel events such as how women can support each other (instead of sabotaging each other!) and how to stay productive and manage your time better. Looking Forward to 2014 My Quote of the Year: Dont mange stress. Prevent stress. Yes, I heard this on Dr. Oz one day and it has stuck with me ever since.  I like to wait until the last minute which creates a lot of unneeded stress for myself. I will not be doing this next year. A Question I Want to Guide Me This Year Is: What can I say no to? What can I delegate? Words I Want to Embody This Year Are: Simple, balance, focus and peace. My Personal 2014 Goals: I want to experience what it is like to: Read at least two books per month Read the bible every day Enjoy life and my family Do yoga 2-3 times per week. Meditate daily. Treat myself to manicures and other things I enjoy weekly. Wake up by at least 5:30 am every weekday morning. Spend every Sunday completely free of technology, email and work for a Sabbath (and try to get chores and groceries done before Sunday too!) My Professional 2014 Goals: Speak at multiple womens events and corporations about my book including the  Pennsylvania  Conference for Women Join a mastermind group and attend at least 2 networking events around San Diego every month Write for a national magazine Be interviewed on a national news program Launch my book, The Professional Womans Guide to Managing Men, on February 18th! Launch my brand new six-month group coaching program for female leaders in March 2014 which includes my 6 steps to becoming a more effective female leader.  This program will be offered throughout the year in person in San Diego and virtually through webinars and coaching calls. Continue individual coaching with female leaders who want to accelerate their career, upgrade their leadership, manage their time better, improve their communication techniques, manage stress and find career satisfaction. Launch a digital and audio product that consolidates all of the AMAZING advice so far this year in the Get Ahead Club. I have interviewed 23 career experts and authors and I will be taking the best advice from all of the interviews and packaging it up for you in 2014! Start doing more corporate trainings and workshops for corporations on business etiquette skills, leadership development, communication techniques and personal development. Continue to interview some amazing career experts and authors in the Get Ahead Club.  Coming up in Q1 2014, I have Gail Evans AND Dr. Lois Frankel on the interview list!! I cant wait!! Things To Say No To In 2014: I have a really hard time saying no so this is really important for me this year. I will say no to unnecessary television especially since I work from home during the days. Talk about major distractions! I will say no to being a professor. I LOVED teaching at DeVry University this year but I have come to the realization that it has become a distraction from my ultimate goal and dream which is coaching and training female leaders.  I may go back towards the end of 2014 but I will be taking at least a 6-month break to focus more on my own business.  Teaching as a professor has made me realize I love teaching! But, I want to teach my own material and I can easily do without the late homework excuses and grading papers. I will say no to job search coaching. This was a really hard decision. For the past three years I have offered job search, resume and interview preparation coaching to my clients.  I have loved every second of the work I have done but with my book coming out, I have realized that my passions and focus are changing.  My new 2014 individual coaching spots will now only be for mid to high-level leaders looking for leadership development, time management, communication and stress management techniques to upgrade their leadership and accelerate their career success. BUT DONT WORRY if you are a job searcher!! Over the last few years, I have created tons of job search products for you so you can get ALL of my tips and tricks. Check out our Bootcamp page!   Well, I am so grateful for this past year and SO excited for the year to come! Have a happy new year and cheers to all of you!!!

How to Use Online Review Marketing to Grow Your Practice

How to Use Online Review Marketing to Grow Your Practice Word of mouth has always been crucial for every business, including law firms. Today, most word of mouth marketing happens on the Internet. Online reviews are critical for getting new business. This has been the case for over a decade and the influence of online reviews is growing. A new infographic on Inc.com shows it takes 10-12 positive reviews to make up for just one negative review. And delivering exemplary customer service that bumps a Yelp rating up by one star can increase revenue up to nine percent. A two-minute video on  Primary-Intel.com explains how their Customer Experience Analysis delves deep into identifying what a business’s customer base really wants and how well the business is currently meeting their needs. Primary Intelligence analysts say reviews are one way any business can learn more about their customers. Online review sites provide attorneys with a wealth of customer information as well as a channel for marketing legal services. They can help you discover how to provide exemplary services that earn five-star reviews and more clients. Online Review Essentials Although others leave the reviews, you do have some control over online review marketing. The key is to be an active participant. Treat review sites as if they are a regular part of your marketing strategy. Make time to create an action plan and regularly maintain pages on review sites as much as you can. Claim Your Page on Review Sites Right now your practice may have review pages on sites like Yelp, and you don’t even know it. Every review page that goes unclaimed is a missed opportunity. Unclaimed pages don’t have your branding or information â€" basically, your presence is missing. This doesn’t create the best first impression for potential clients that are reading reviews on local attorneys. If you’re an attorney you’ll need to check the standard review sites as well as those specifically for legal services. Some of the big players include Avvo.com, Lawyers.com,  and FindLaw.com. Add Personality and Imagery Think of your review pages as extensions of your website. In many cases, they may actually show up before your own website when people do a Google search. Add your logo, images related to your practice and a punchy description. Make sure there are links to your website and that it adheres to your branding as closely as possible. Don’t be afraid to add a little personality and show the people behind the practice. Keep Information Updated Once your pages are claimed you’ll need to keep them updated and add to them often. If your phone number or address changes, update the information right away. This is not only better for the user experience and clients, it can also help you rank higher for local searches in Google. Check Them Regularly Review sites are living, breathing things. Because the content is consumer-driven they are constantly changing. You or someone on your team will need to check your review pages at least a few times a week to monitor review activity. If a client leaves a review send them a quick email to thank them for taking the time to provide feedback. React Quickly to Correct a Negative Review A large part of making online review marketing work for your practice is managing rough reviews quickly. It’s what marketers call reputation management. Studies have shown that users view a business more favorably if they respond to negative reviews in a professional way and offer to correct the problem. If a review is just outright false calmly address the inaccuracies and offer to discuss the matter with the reviewer over the phone. Consider Advertising on Online Review Sites If you have a good rating on a review site, you may want to consider their advertising options. Many review sites will run paid or sponsored ads at the top of search results. They look like regular results for the most part, but ads put your practice front and center. Tips for Getting Positive Reviews From Happy Clients The best thing you can do to get positive reviews is to gently ask for them. If a client had a positive experience, ask them to review your practice. Clients who just won their case are usually more than happy to provide a rave review. Use Email to Ask for Reviews The easiest way to ask for reviews is in a thank-you email. After your case is settled or your legal service is complete, send your client an email to thank them. Mention that you always appreciate feedack from clients, including reviews. Include links to your social media sites and review pages in the email signature so it’s easy for your client to provide a review. Use Your Website to Ask for Reviews and Promote Ratings Your website is another way to invite clients to review your legal practice. Add icons that link to your top-rated review pages either in the header or the footer. That way it’s easy for users to read reviews about your practice. You can also highlight some of your best reviews right on the home page. Images: Main   Reviews

5.5 Negotiation Concepts Worth Knowing CareerMetis.com

5.5 Negotiation Concepts Worth Knowing Recently I attended a company training event. One of the sessions was about Effective Negotiating; we were introduced to some new ideas on Negotiation and also some effective techniques. We were each given a copy of the book Negotiation Genius. It was one of the best books on Negotiation and Communication, I have ever read. I found myself rather excited about the topic, and I was hungry to learn more. I was hooked- I wanted to learn as much as possible about Negotiation.evalI decided to explore deeper â€" I said to myself “Why stop at one book on the topic? Why don’t I read more?”.Thanks to Amazon Kindle â€" it was not difficult to find few more books in the Negotiation category. I ended up reading 5 books in the span of a month evalThis was a mind-blowing concept for me. The pre-conceived idea about negotiation is that there is a limit on what both parties on the table can get; that the elements of negotiation are definite/fixed; you have to split the pie in such a way that the total is 100% â€" one person gets 60% and other 40%, or 70-30 split, etc.The “Expanding the Pie” concept completely changes your mindset. Instead of being stuck in the dilemma of having to divide the pie into fixed amounts, think about what else could be included in the discussion. Expand the discussion. It is not about 100%.Let’s take an example of a typical Salary Negotiation. You are a candidate who has just successfully gone through the interview process and you have nailed all of the steps. The company wants you and they want you now. They come to you with an offer Most negotiation If the candidate can understand this, and prove to the hiring manager that he is a quick learner, and has the relevant experience, he can present a strong case on why he is the best fit. The Hiring Manager will now have the confidence to present an offer to this candidate. The candidate’s interest in working for the company may be because of what the organization represents. Now both knows ea ch other’s interests motives â€" this makes it easier to cement the decision. Then the negotiation process can go smoothly.Always try to find out the underlying reason for any decision. If you are a candidate- ask the employer why they are hiring. Why is there a vacancy? Was someone fired?Or the company is growing and they can’t keep up with the growth?Or did the last person quit because of the demeaning boss or a stressful culture? If you are an employer â€" ask the candidate why they want a job at your company. Why are you leaving your current job? What is your motivation? What do you like about the opportunity? When are you available to startThe more information both parties have on each other’s interests- the better the chances of reaching a mutually favorable decision.3) Ask for more than you can expect to getMost of the time, we walk into negotiations with doubts. I agree it is stressful. We are either conditioned not to come across as aggressive, or we have self-doubts confid ence issues. This is normal.I recommend you ASK for MORE. Roger Dawson in his book Secrets of Power Negotiating, calls this bracketing.Let’s say you are a seller of a property. You know the fair market value is $500000, however you list the home for $550000. A buyer on the other hand, (if he has a sense of fair market value) usually puts an offer in for $450000. The seller counter-offers and the process continues until they reach a favorable agreement. They both reach the middle that is $500000.The above example seems pretty simple â€" however, this is how most negotiations work.Apply the same principle to your Job Hunting. The most important thing is to have confidence in your skills, experience abilities. If you believe you are the best fit (this is paramount) â€" then go in with an aggressive salary request. For example, you have done your homework and have learned that the fair market salary for your Role is $50000. You are confident that you are more than qualified to do the j ob; you believe that you are the best candidate they can ever find. If the employer has offered you $50000, you should ask for a higher number (eg. $60000). We know very well, any company will not offer you a 20% ($10000) boost, but they will definitely provide more than the initial offer. Let’s say you even received a $2500 increase â€" you have gained a 5% raise just by asking. It sounds very simple â€" but it takes courage and confidence to do this. I recommend you practice your pitch before you head into the negotiation. In my experience, most employers are reasonable, and they expect you to negotiate. Every hiring manager is expecting that the best candidate will request more. So don’t worry about offending them (they won’t be)4) The Best Return of Investment you will ever receive is by NegotiatingIn most cases, the best return of time investment you will ever receive is by Negotiation.Hands-down.Period.Let’s go back to the Salary Negotiation Example above. You know the f air market value for your role is $50000. You are happy about the company, their benefits package and additional perks (they have a ping-pong table in the office). Let’s say you accept that offer at $50000 â€" you have to wait for your next annual performance review for a raise. The conventional salary increases are at 3% â€" this means in Year 2 your salary will be $51500. You have spent a year to earn an additional $1500.Let’s make this fun â€" 365 days equals 8760 hours; which equals 525600 minutes in a year. So for 525600 minutes of work you have earned an additional $1500.Now, let’s say you decided to negotiate the salary upfront and ask for me. You are able to win an additional $2500 in starting salary, and all you spent during the negotiation was a total of 10 minutes. So, for 10 minutes you earned an additional $2500.Do the math… You can spend an entire year trying to scrimp budget to save an additional $2500, or you can earn that just by asking.5) Go to the Balcony I learned this concept from William Ury’s Getting Past No. The author urges not to react in situations wherein we are required to react and make a quick decision. Our emotions often get in our way -as a result, we do not make the most rational decision. The person who is the calmest in a negotiation situation always gains an upper hand.It is an unfortunate thing that many negotiators will use gambits, tricks to gain an advantage. This is just a fact. No point in fighting this-just accept it.Going to the Balcony is a metaphor. It means, whenever you feel under pressure or feel cornered, take a moment to step outside (physically or mentally). Take a deep breath.Take your ego out of the negotiation process. What is your end goal? Is it to protect your ego or reaching a favorable outcome? One effective way to Go the Balcony is to not make a decision on the spot. Take some time away from the negotiation situation â€" take a break, step outside, sleep on it and come back with a better pers pective.Avoid making decisions under pressure. There is a high likelihood that you will not be happy with the decision. The more time you take when making a decision, the better decision you will make.As a Sales Professional, I hate it when prospects delay the decision-making process. Honestly, I want them to make a decision promptly so I can make a sale reach my quota. But sometimes, I have learned that giving them some space to make the right decision turns out to be a positive thing. There is a big difference in just making a sale vs building a strong relationship. The same applies to your Salary Negotiation. If you are under pressure, request permission to take a moment. Then go back to them with your request. One effective strategy that I have used is the following.Usually, the HR representative will call you and tell you that they want to extend an offer. They will state a number that they think is fair for you.You are excited but you are also afraid that you might get a low-ba ll offer. There is a level of adrenaline rush mixed with nervous tension at this point. I recommend that you reconnect at a later time to have a lengthier discussion. Ask their permission to schedule a phone call at another time to talk more. During that break time, you are able to gain a better perspective. You can then go back calm and relaxed with your counter-offer.5.5) Get EducatedI have mentioned before, that everyone wants to get the best possible deal. The idea of deal-making has been drilled down into our psyche. And everyone knows about techniques such as low-balling, bracketing, etc. There are about 50+ Negotiation Techniques out there employed by more experienced negotiators. It is your responsibility to be better equipped in the negotiation situation. Don’t blame the other party for the use of tactics gambitsNegotiation is a part of life, it is a part of the process- sales, property sale, business negotiations, salary negotiations, etc.We are always negotiating in our lives. So learn about Negotiating. There are tons of resources â€" books, courses, videos, etc.(See below the 5 Books that will be a good starting point for you to learn about Negotiation).Remember, the best return on investment you will ever get is by Negotiating. Period…It is important for you to learn to Negotiate. It is a paramount career life skill. The more you value the skill, the more opportunities you negotiate- the more money you will add to your bottom line.I want to hear your Negotiation Success Stories.Negotiation Genius (Deepak Malhotra Max Bezerman)Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement without Giving In (Roger Fisher William Ury)Getting Past No (William Ury)Getting to yes with yourself and other worthy opponents (William Ury)Secrets of Power Negotiating (Roger Dawson)
