How I decide when to leave or stay in a job

How I decide when to leave or stay in a jobHow I decide when to leave or stay in a jobThis post welches originally posted on May 2nd, atVessyTash.com.Vessy, why dont you bewerberinterview the founders? asked my friend Velina Getova on the phone.I welches at the end of the hiring process with and asked her for her experience working with its founders as advisor of the startup over the last couple of years.During the last 10 years, Velina and I had many experiences together. We studied at the same university. We were both part of the university radio station. One point we also worked in the same tech company back in Bulgaria. We are quite different as individuals. Yet, we share the same values. When I asked her for advice, I knew I could trust her opinion on whether I was a good culture fit for , and vice versa.Ask them everything youd like to know about the company - vision, strategy, culture, product, team, yur role and expectations from you.. she added. At the end of an interview yo u can only ask a handful of question. If you request to interview them, you will be able to ask all your questions and evaluate the opportunity in depth.I followed her advice. I requested 30min interview with each of the founders and got them3 of the questions I asked them and why it was important for me to knowthatWhat are you struggling with? That would allow me to understand if they are aware of their weaknesses and problems. Why do you think you need me?That would help me understand what they expect from me, where they expect impact from me that was to help me re-adjust my own expectations, if needed, in regards to quality of work, work styles, values, etc.How well do you think youre doing with X?Id pick an area that I thought they were not doing well (that they hadnt mentioned), so I could give them negative feedback to observe how they deal with it.What stood out convinced me to move to the newjobActually collaborative environmentthey were happy to hear that I disagreed with th em. We wouldnt have been able to discuss things or collaborate, if they were unhappy that I voice my opinions.Authentic communicationfirst, they were happy to be interviewed by me. But mora importantly they were comfortable to say what they know and dont know. They didnt pretend.Working as equalsthey valued my expertise and saw it as an opportunity to learn from me. That meant we could learn from each other.(I joined in neunter monat des jahres 2016. Velina Getova joined us as a COO about a year later.)I believe that those 3 things allowed me to flourish at . Ive been feeling valued and appreciated from day one until now. The founders trust me. The autonomy empowers me to bring and pursuit risky, courageous ideas. That engaged me 100%. I originally joined as Director of Strategy. Only 4 months into joining them, they promoted me to Chief Strategy Officer. And recently, they asked me to become CMO. That meant giving me the responsibility to manage the biggest team and budget in the co mpany.Over the last 9 years, I have worked in 5 organizations, and reported to over 15 founders, C-level executives, managers, and directors.Thats how I realized what I value/dislike in a leader or an organization, and what keeps me on a job or pushes me to make a change. I call them forces and I have identified 7 that impact me. They are quite individual so yours could be similar to mine or completely different.7 forces that always help me decide whether to leave or stay in ajob(not necessarily in order of importance)1 IMPACT ACCOUNTABILITYI stay whenI feel that I make an impact on the bottom line - e.g. being responsible for 1/3 of the deliverables to our clients.I deliver something of actual value to real, ordinary people who struggle, not just cold, rich corporations - its with empathy for the customer. The company and I deliver things that are meaningful for the team and the customers and related to my purpose.Through my role at and through my Medium posts, I help people rem ember what they enjoy and encourage them to combine it with what they are good at. This journey eventually leads them to getting a job that brings happiness, satisfaction, and meaning to their life, and thus, to mine, too.I leave whenthe organization lacks empathy, decisions are purely business-driven, and at the expense of people.I feel insignificant or my role has a minor impact on big company decisions and/or bottom line, the people around me fail to deliver what they have promised.2 AUTONOMYI stay whenI feel trusted,I have the freedom to decide what to work on that allows me to have the biggest impact.I leave whenI sense a lack of trust towards me or a colleague,Im micromanaged, bullied, controlled, policed, or given orders.A manager in a previous company commented on me coming in 5min late for a meeting. That was inappropriate and I felt policed, as Id often get up for calls at 6am with Australia, which would stretch my work day to 12 hours.3 LEARNING CHALLENGINGI stay whenI se e that the company is willing to invest in me to learn,I feel that my natural curiosity to learn, experiment, figure things out, ask questions is appreciatedI am challenged in a healthy manner and with good intentionsA company had dedicated a significant budget to invest in my training and development. When I brought proposals, they found them too expensive. I started questioning if the budget was meant to be spent or just added to make the package attractive. So while that was something that was originally keeping me to stay, it flipped into a reason to leave..I leave whenI dont think I learn (enough) new things anymore,Im punished for asking questions.Once I asked the team lead in a previous company of mine what the strategy is. They told me to focus on my project and leave the more senior and knowledgeable people worry about strategy.4 QUALITY OF PEOPLE, PRODUCT, WORK CONDITIONSI stay wheneverything we create is well done - this brings me so much joyI work with people who share my desire for quality, enjoy working hard, who inspire me with their big ideas and a small ego, and who I can learn from,I am rewarded with a fair, competitive pay. Although money is not my main driver, it signals if Im being appreciated and valued, or just taken advantage of. Same for benefits and office space.I leave whenpeople dont care about quality, leave things unfinished, or say its someone elses responsibility,I feel manipulated in a pay raise/promotion conversation.A company I used to work for lost one of its clients. I saw it as a failure of the leadership to recognize this in advance, as the 2-year contract was coming to an end. Everyones salary was decreased by 1020%. The leadership punished its employees for something they didnt overlook. Also, I felt manipulated when new clients were attracted, the pay wasnt restored.5 ENVIRONMENT CARE, HELP, SUPPORTI stay whenwe, as colleagues, genuinely help each other with personal and professional struggles, regardless of seniori tywe give each other guidance and feedback, regardless of seniorityTatiana, our PR, has seen me at my lowest point - in the very moment my heart got broken. She listened to me, she helped me deal with the anger, the disappointment, and the grief. She encouraged me to listen, to ask questions, rather than blame. That helped me be a better person and eventually have a smooth separation, rather than a bad and ugly breakup.I leave whenthe employer-employee relationship is a one-way street and bluntly transactionalcolleagues treat each other as a means to an end to achieve a goalthe employer expects you to put work as 1 priority and to be available almost 24/76 AUTHENTIC, TRANSPARENT COMMUNICATION = STRONG LEADERSHIPI stay whenI see that people in the company feel comfortable to speak up challengeI feel valued, listened to, accepted for who I am as an individualI can learn from the leadership and they inspire me to learn from themI can feel that the leadership believes in me and respec ts how I feelI leave whenthe leadership operates through fear, bullying, authoritative micromanagement, directives, the leadership intentionally makes you feel replaceable or belittles youthe leaders lack courage, character, and presencethe leaders are associated with ambiguity rather than authenticity, clarity, and transparency.I was deeply disappointed by an action of a former employer. I addressed it. They dealt with the situation in a cold, distant manner. I experienced the opposite of authenticity and that was a deal breaker. The trust was lost. Instead, I was asked to put a smile on my face and get back to work. Business always came first, never the people. Im pretty sure I went through each of those5 stages.7 PRIDEI stay whenI feel proud of the place where I work. E.g. because its promising, with potential, prestigious, known for the high quality of its products and talent, and/or gives me international exposure.I can wholeheartedly recommend the company to employees and custo mers.I leave whenI am ashamed, embarrassed or disappointed by the companys ethics and values.I am disappointed by the lack of interest in a certain company or public issues.A company I used to work for failed to show their support for LGBT employees in a country thats predominantly homophobic. That was addressed by current and past employees, both straight and gay. The PRs ignored it. Employees brought it to the leadership and they made promises. No actions were taken and that resulted in some gay employees leaving the company. Others remained in the closet. When do Ileave? We dont think about it as a formula, but heres what our brain keeps recalculating - Graph The 4 forces according to Jobs-To-Be-Done methodology, applied to change ajobThe blackare the push forces that make the new job more attractive to meproblems with the current job (reasons I would leave)the attraction of the new job (reasons I would join)The blue are the pull forces that make me stay in my current jobexisting h abits (reasons I would stay)anxieties uncertainties related to change - mostly fears of failure and what ifs, such as what if my boss is an asshole? Each force has a different magnitude. And its magnitude is not static. It can grow over time. For example, pay can be acceptable today, you tolerate it, its okay that they passed you for a pay raise this quarter. But next quarter you are pissed off. You are more ready to leave.Forces vs Pros ConsThe forces are more than just pros and cons. For example, a fancy office is a pro, but it doesnt act as a force for me.To identify your forces, listen to your inner voice and put things down. Its super individual.Quick exercise How to identify the forces that impact your decision?(Takes 15min)Draw a timeline to mark all your previous jobs on it chronologically.Under each job put down what kept you there and what made you eventually leave. Thats how you extract the forces.Use the graph from earlier and write down the forces in the respective sectio nE.g. If you have listed earlier that the quality of the product is important for you and the product of your current company is mediocre, then put down mediocre product under Problems with a current job.It should look something like this - Graph The 4 forces with examples and scores about their magnitude4. Score each force (5 points are max, 1 is min)E.g. If the quality of the product is not just something you factor in, but quite important for you, then you should score it as a 4, maybe even a 5. So next to mediocre product write down4.5. Calculate the balanceIn the example above the balance would be4+5+2+2 = 13 points - thats the magnitude of the forces pushing you towards the new job.2+3+2+2 = 9points - thats the magnitude of the forces pushing you towards staying in your current job.Balance 139 =+4The balance in this example is significantly positive and that means the new job in that context looks extremely attractive.2 things to remember aboutforcesThe forces and their magn itude are strictly individual. Whats critical for me, might not be important for you atall. The magnitude of a force changes over time. For example, as a young professional, I didnt care about health benefits as much as I do now that Im in my30s.Hope you find it useful to figure out if to stay or leave your jobIf you are having a trouble calculating your balance, reach out to me on Facebook.P. Study Men with strong handshakes more likely to be married

Study Men with strong handshakes more likely to be marriedStudy Men with strong handshakes more likely to be marriedWe all know having a firm handshake (but not too firm) is an essential body language component in business. But according to a new study it could also determine whether a man is marriage material or not.Researchers at Columbia Universitys Mailman School of Public Health and the Columbia Aging Centerfound men with a stronger grip were more likely to be married than men with weaker grips. Apparently,a firm grip indicates that the man is strong, independent and has really good coping skills - for all of lifes hardships. In other words, a firm handshake indicates that he will stick with you in sickness and in health and he also wont be sick and will be on the healthy side. The study was conducted with two groups of Norwegians. One group had subjects that were born in between 1923 and 1935 and a second group that was born from 1936 to 1948. The 5,009 participants were require d to squeeze a rubber balloon, and a vigorimeter measured their handgrip strength.Firm handshake = healthyWith the handshake, it really comes down to the man showing he is a healthy specimen. Our results hint that women may be favoring partners who signal strength and vigor when they marry, said Vegard Skirbekk, a professor at the Columbia Ageing Centre and the studys author. If longer-lived women marry healthier men, then both may avoid or defer the role of caregiver, while less healthy men remain unmarried and must look elsewhere for assistance. The study found that grip strength is particularly important for older adults. A weak handshake can indicate a slew of health risks - for heart disease and fractures, physical mobility, the capacity to be socially active and healthy, and to enjoy a good quality of life. Wow. Thats a whole lot of information for one handshake. If only the women on The Bachelorette knew this. They would save so much time.

Visualize the net worth of Americas richest self-made women

Visualize the net worth of Americas richest self-made womenVisualize the net worth of Americas richest self-made womenFemale entrepreneurialism is on the rise. According to a new ranking fromForbes, the combined net worth of the countrys top 60 self-made women has increased 15% over last year, totaling an impressive $71B. And the minimum threshold to even make it onto the list increased to $320M. With so much money at stake, we created a new visualization highlighting the names and faces of the most successful businesswomen in the country.Click here for a larger version of this graphic. We made our visualization using data fromForbesdocumenting the net worth and industries from which self-made women amassed their fortunes as of 2018. Forbes arrived at behauptung figures by analyzing the value of publicly held stock as of June 22, 2018 as well as conservative estimates of the value for privately held companies compared to similar public ones. Forbes also defined anybody who built their own fortune (as opposed to inheriting it) to be self-made, eliminating women who are second-generation business owners. We used the value of their fortunes to create a color-coded bubble chart, letting you easily see which women have the largest net worths and how many fall into which wealth brackets. Here are the ten richest self-made women according to Forbes, together with their net worth and the primary industry in which they made their money.1. Diane Hendricks $4.9B (Roofing)2. Marian Ilitch $4.3B (Little Caesars)3. Judy Faulkner $3.5B (Healthcare IT)4. Meg Whitman $3.3B (eBay)5. Johnelle Hunt $3.2B (Trucking)6. Oprah Winfrey $3.1B (TV shows)7. Judy Love $3.0B (Retail gas stations)8. Doris Fisher $2.8B (Gap)9. Elaine Wynn $2.6B (Casinos, hotels)10.Lynda Resnick $2.4B (Agriculture)Our visualization highlights a number of women that were betting most readers dont know yet. There is, of course, Oprah, with her fortune of $3.1B and rumors of anincreasingly unlikelypresidential run . Meg Whitman is also very well known given her success at eBay, tumultuous tenure at Hewlett-Packard, and subsequent campaigns for governor in California. But were betting that in general, most people would be hard pressed to identify anyone else pictured in the bubbles in our visualization. Marian Ilitch is the mastermind behind Little Caesars, and Judy Faulkner heads up a company with healthcare software in most of the nations best hospitals. Every person on the list is tremendously successful in their own right. Self-made women just arent as well known as self-made men, but given their billions of wealth, they obviously have a lot to teach us about success.Another interesting takeaway from our visual is the inequality it displays even among this elite group. Only two women exceed $4B, and only five are between $3-4B. The average fortune size is $1.18B, which sounds like a lot of money until you remember Mark Zuckerberg lostalmost $17Bin a single day this summer. He certainly sti ll has billions and billions left over. In fact, 36 out of the 60 women represented here have amassed personal fortunes valued at less than $1B. The implication of these numbers is that there just arent very many self-made women in the business world.Want to learn mora about the gender wage gap? Tanya Denny - Chrysalis Therapeutic Support Services

Tanya Denny - Chrysalis Therapeutic Support Services Tanya Denny Founder of Chrysalis Therapeutic Support ServicesPosted March 29, 2018, by Jenny Sakr Tanya is an accredited social worker with 25 years of experience in the delivery of client-focused therapeutic services for children, young people and their families. Her professional experience includesClinical Services in Residential OOHC (out of home care), alcohol and other drug treatment, womens services, restoration and GLBTQI services for young people. Read about her highs and lows in the field and how she recently abfluged her own support service. What is your current role and what does it involve? My current roles include CEO and founder of NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) Registered Provider, Chrysalis Therapeutic Support Services, specialising in clinical and therapeutic interventions for children, adults and families living with psychosocial disabilities. Family work, couples therapy peer and group supervision an d training. What welches your first job and what do you think it taught you?I didnt really know that I was heading to social work but I always fascinated by people, how they think and feel, what their stories were and how they got from there (wherever that was) to here. My first job in welfare was in the 80s as a support worker in a womens refuge in Kings Cross. Here I was exposed to womens incredible stories of courage and survival. I learned all things were not equal, terrible tragic things happen to amazing people and people can lose everything they love and pick themselves back up. Thats when I started to dream bigger for my own life.Tell us more about starting your own support serviceA few years ago I watched a very good friend and fellow social worker, set up a clinic in Coffs Harbour. She knew what she wanted, worked very hard, used all of her skills to connect to a network of professionals and didnt give up. Today her practice is flourishing. In 2017 a colleague became a regis tered NDIS provider and suggested I take a look. She was right, NDIS offered me an opportunity to think outside the box about how I could use my skills to start my private practice. I did mounds of research and talked to other social workers, colleagues and friends before taking the plunge. I took a big breath and stepped out on my own. To establish an enterprise like Chrysalis I needed ALL the skills I had learned over the years (crisis intervention case management submission and report writing people management clients services and effective communication). I had a lot of experience in organisational management roles, those skills became indispensable when it came to writing policy and procedures, mission statement, and clarifying what services I could provide. NIDS provider eligibility required Third Party Verification before I was approved to offer services to participants. The Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) had some great resources for private practitioners so I started there, read everything I could find on LinkedIn and consulted accountants, and other private practitioners. I didnt realise how much I needed to learn about business succession planning, brand development, social media and marketing. Who knew so much work and detail went into building websites and designing business cards. Six months down the track Chrysalis Therapeutic Support Services and I are thriving, together.Name a career highlightI have been very fortunate in my career and have many, many highlights, including great career opportunities and been apart of some wonderful outcomes for children and families but I have to say that visiting Jasper Mountain in Oregon is the top of my list. Training with Dr Dave Zeigler and his clinical team challenged inspired and changed how I work with kids and families.Name a career lowOne organisation I worked for a long time yperit its funding. I remember being devastated for the kids we worked with but powerless to change the governments decision.Name something you still dont knowBookkeeping/accounts and all things technical/social media e.g. find out what the heck are AD wordsWhats the most important career tip someone has given you?Critical self-reflection is a skill - learn it.What career advice do you wish someone had given you when you finished high school?Knowledge is powerMake glorious mistakesDo right by othersWhat are some important qualities and skills people should have if they want to be a social worker?Courage, integrity, and tolerance are the qualities that come to mind. Being a social worker requires self-knowledge, communication skills and resilience. Wanting to help people will not be enough and commitment to social justice on its own isnt enough either. Most Social Work degrees are general and cover the three areas of knowledge essential for social work practice theories of social work, practical skills, and legal ethical requirements. What area of practice a social worker specialises in will also have a set of focussed or targeted skills required, e.g. Mental Health Social Worker accreditation requires additional training. What are the steps you took to become a social worker and what is the standard salary? My professional identity has evolved over decades beginning in the late 80s. As a young woman growing up in Tasmania I wasnt exposed to the ideals of self-determination, gender inequity, class equality and social justice. I left school with a Year 10 certificate and ran away to join the circus. Girls from my side of town werent expected to have careers. It wasnt until I was in my mid 20s that my working life began. My career trajectory is possibly not the typical one for a social worker because I worked in community organisations for a lot of years before attaining Masters of Social Work and had been in management roles for years. My career started at the bottom, I had no real experience but was given a chance and I took the opportunity. I worked very hard, studied and trained, made lots of mistakes, absorbed knowledge from brilliant social work practitioners and took every opportunity to challenge myself. Life experience is a valuable asset in social work but so is social work education. Being skilled and educated opens up different career avenues. There are many different types of social and community services and different levels of qualifications needed. There are a number of roles affiliated with social work for people at Cert IV or Diploma level in Residential Care and Disability Sector. Some Universities also offer a Diploma entry-level pathway into a BA Social Work. I did a Bachelor of Arts (4 years) and a Master of Social Work (2 years). To be accredited qualified Social Workers must be eligible for AASW membership.Whats next for you?Continue developing Chrysalis Therapeutic Support Services.Tell us a fun fact about yourselfI studied at NIDA and hold a Bachelors in Acting and Graduate Diploma in Directing. I took on the ti tle of theatre director for a number of years and directed plays in the Italian language without being able to speak Italian but thats a long fabulous story for another time.Inspired by Tanya to help your community? How to Help Your Child Find a Job

How to Help Your Child Find a JobHow to Help Your Child Find a JobAs a parent, you can play a useful role in helping your child search for jobs. However, be sure your good intentions dont gotoo far and have a negative effect. Here are a couple ofexamples of over-involved parenting that can be counterproductive The motherof a recent graduate attended a college alumnicareer networking eventwith her daughter. She came to help her daughter- who looked appropriately mortified- find a job. In another example, a young man whohad recently earned a PhD accepted a postdoctoral ort in a city far from his hometown. He arrived to tour campus and search for housing with both parents in tow to approve of the job offer and the community. However, if your son or daughter is like most young people, heorshewill need some guidance and encouragement to be appropriately engaged in the career planning process. You can help lay the groundwork with advice and support and then encourage yourchildto move forwa rd independently toward goals that they embrace. Tips for Helping Your Son or Daughter Get Hired The following suggestions will help you to take on a constructive role and help your child to take positive steps toward planning their career and landing a job. 1.Encourage your child to learn about careers from an early age. Discuss your role at work and the role of colleagues at your workplace. Foster curiosity about the occupational involvements of friends, other family members, and neighbors. Introduce your child to resources with career information like the Occupational Outlook Handbook. 2.Investigate the services offered by your childshigh school guidance or college career geschftszimmer. Most offices will have detailed websites outlining their services. Point out programs and resources that you think might be helpful for your son or daughter. Ask your child to set up a meeting with a career counselor early during their high school or college years sotheyhaveachancetoexploreth eir options. 3.Teach your child how to conduct an informational interview and have them practice with you and other close contacts. These meetings will help them to explore options, hone interviewing skills, and make positive impressions that can lead to jobs and internships. Introduce them to colleagues and local professionals in roles that spark their curiosity.Help them to write their first emaille asking to set up an informational meeting, and critique subsequent letters until you are confident that they are representing themselves effectively. Help them to generate a list of questions to ask. 4.Encourage your son or daughter to set up job shadows through hisorherguidance or career office or through your contacts or local professionals. Job shadowing experiences will help them to solidify contacts and explore work roles and work environments. 5.Emphasize the importance of gaining experience and experimenting with interests through internships and summer jobs starting during high school. Dont fixate on money encourage even unpaid internships to build resume fodder. It will pay off later. 6.Insist that they formulate a draft of their resume (with your help and that of school counselors) from an early age to show them the importance of gaining experience.School activities and sports can be used to populate their document prior to accumulating formal work experience. 7.Preach the gospel of networking.Share examples of how utilizing contacts has helped you and others during job searches. Help them to organize a networking campaign by sharing your family/friend contacts and coaching them about effective ways to approach contacts. Make sure your college-agechild reaches out to their career and alumni offices and asks about networking contacts in fields of interest and networking events sponsored by their college. 8.Ask them to make an appointment for a practice interview at their school and/or conduct a mock interview yourself. Discuss interviewing strategy with them. 9.Review job/internship postings with them from their schools databases and sites like Indeed.com. Set weekly goals for applications. Help critique and proofread their cover letters. 10.Get involved with their schools career services. Volunteer to help your childs career office with networking events and career days. You will meet other parents who may be of assistance to your childina you rub my back, and I will rub yoursmanner. 11.Avoid speaking to employers on your childs behalf or accompanying your child to career events or interviews. Help to equip them with knowledge and skills and then let them fight their own battles. Assist with transportation as needed if they arent able to drive themselves. 12.Dont make your adult children too comfortable with hanging out at home after graduation. Make sure they take on as much financial responsibility as possible- it will motive them to get a good job. Hold them accountable for taking productive steps like those above to seek emplo yment while you are subsidizing them. 13.Celebrate their successful steps in the process.Parental praise can go a long way toward motivating your child to be engaged. A congratulatory trip to the ice cream parlor for a task well done wont hurt either.
